One of of the things Final Draft does to make it easy to write a script in the correct format is to move you from one paragraph type to the next logical paragraph type by pressing the Enter/Return key. For example, since in a screenplay a Scene Heading is almost always followed by Action, Final Draft is set to go from a Scene Heading to Action when the Enter/Return key is pressed.
To change what the Enter/Return key will transition to at the end of a paragraph:
- Go to Format > Elements (Mac) or Elements > Settings (Windows);
- From the list on the left, choose the element you want to transition from;
- From the Return Key dropdown menu the right, choose the element you want the Enter/Return key to transition to;
- Click OK.
In this example, we will set the Enter/Return key so that it takes you from Dialogue to Character. A lot of people set Final Draft up this way because it allows them to more quickly write dialogue scenes between characters.
- Go to Format > Elements (Mac) or Elements > Settings (Windows);
- Choose Dialogue from the list on the left;
- On the right, expand the dropdown menu and choose Character;
- Click OK.
Now when you finish typing a character's dialogue and you press Enter/Return, the cursor will move to a new Character paragraph.
