There are several ways to cheat the number of pages in your script.
IMPORTANT: We strongly recommend that you experiment with a test copy of your script instead of working with the master. Go to File > Save As and rename the script "Pagination Test" or something similar.
There are two options that will affect only particular blocks of text and three options that will affect your entire script. We recommend that you try the local tweaks before trying the global tweaks because experienced readers will usually be able to spot a script whose pagination has been manipulated.
1. You can tighten or loosen the vertical line spacing (leading) of a particular paragraph by placing the blinking cursor anywhere in that paragraph, choosing Format > Leading and selecting an option:
2. You can narrow or widen the horizontal margin of a single paragraph:
- Place your cursor anywhere within the paragraph whose indent you want to change. You will see left and right tab stops in the ruler.
- Drag these stops to the margin you want and the paragraph will change with it. In this example, we are widening the paragraph that begins with "I'm not here..."
3. You can narrow or widen the horizontal margin of one or more paragraphs throughout the script:
- Go to Format > Elements (Mac) or Format > Elements Settings (Windows);
- Click the Paragraph tab;
- Highlight the element you want to change;
4. Alter the left- or (more typically) the right-hand indents. Choose the element from the list on the left and adjust the spinners up or down to change the distance of the indent from the left edge of the page.
5. You can tighten or loosen the vertical line spacing of your entire script:
- Go to Document > Page Layout;
- Click Options;
- Select an option from the Line Spacing field.
A word of advice: if you make your script Very Tight, print out a few test pages and see how they look. If they look too dense to you, they will look too dense to the reader as well.
6. Finally, you can increase or decrease the top and bottom page margins:
- Go to Document > Page Layout and click on the Margins tab;
- Raise or lower the top or bottom Text and / or Header/Footer margins.
