If you get a message saying that the PDF printer failed to initialize (or a similar error message), it indicates that the MS Print to PDF driver that creates the PDF isn't installed or enabled in your Windows operating system. One of these two procedures should enable this driver on your computer:
- Close Final Draft, if it's open;
- In the Start menu Search box, type
optionalfeatures
This opens a dialogue called Turn Windows Features On or Off.
- Uncheck the Microsoft Print to PDF box;
- Click OK;
- Reopen optionalfeatures;
- Check the box for Microsoft Print to PDF;
- Click OK.
- Open FInal Draft and you should be able to create a PDF.
IF THIS DOESN'T WORK
- Close Final Draft, if it's open;
- Go to Start > Settings > Devices;
- Choose Printers and Scanners;
- Click Add a Printer;
- Choose "The printer that I want isn’t listed";
- Choose "Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings";
- From the drop-down menu next to Use an existing port, select FILE: (Print to File), then click Next;
- In the left-hand Manufacturer box, click on Microsoft;
- In the right-hand panel choose Microsoft Print to PDF;
- Click Next;
- Select Replace Current Driver and click Next;
- Make sure the driver is named ONLY Microsoft Print to PDF -- if "Copy 1" or something like that is added to the end of the driver name, delete it;
- Click Next again;
- Uncheck the box to set as the default printer;
- Click Finish
- Open Final Draft and you should be able to create a PDF.
