Whenever you save or the auto-save saves your script, Final Draft makes an additional date- and time-stamped copy and places it in another folder for safe-keeping. You can set the location of this folder to be on any drive or partition you want and also set the number of backups stored in the folder before the older backups are purged. The files will be named as
yearmonthdaymilitarytimefilename.fdx
so if you saved your script, Casablanca, on December 25th, 2023 at 8AM, the backup file will have this name:
202312250800Casablanca.fdx
To access the Final Draft Backup folder:
Final Draft 13 and 12
1. Open Final Draft and go to Tools > Options;
2. Click Open Backup Folder to display your backup files;
3. Choose one or more backups and click Open.
Final Draft 11.1.x
Go to Help > About Final Draft to see which version you have. If you don't have 11.1.x, go to Help > Check for Updates and follow the prompts.
Once you have 11.1.x installed:
1. Open Final Draft and go to Tools > Options;
2. Click Open Backup Folder to display your backup files;
3. Choose one or more backups and click Open.
Final Draft 11.0x / 10 / 9
1. Open Final Draft and go to Tools > Options;
2. Click Open Backup Folder to display your backup files;
3. Choose one or more backups and drag the file icon(s) to the Desktop icon in the left-hand panel:
4. Close the Backup folder window to return to Final Draft;
5. Click OK to close the Options window;
6. Go to File > Open and navigate the Open window to look in the Desktop;
7. Double-click on the backup you want.
Final Draft 8:
Open Final Draft and go to Tools > Options;
- Click into the Backup folder box towards the bottom of this window;
- Select (highlight) all of it with Control + A on your keyboard;
- Copy it with Control + C on your keyboard;
Windows 8:
- Open the File Explorer and into the address bar at the top of the window paste this copied path (Control + V on your keyboard);
- Press Enter and the Backup folder should open with the backup files listed.
