Question
I'm getting an Error -43 message on Final Draft 7.

Answer

This appears to be more a Mac OS X 10.3.9 problem than a Final Draft problem; the Apple support page returns 150 articles on this error and it affects many different programs.

We have not been able to replicate it on any of the 20 or so Macs in our office and therefore have not been able to run tests, so the solutions offered below may or may not be effective.

If you're not able to save the script after an Error -43:

  1. With your script open, press Apple + A on your keyboard to select the entire document.
  2. Press Apple + C on your keyboard to copy the entire document.
  3. Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Final Draft 7.
  4. Control + click on the green Final Draft 7 application icon and choose Duplicate. This will generate another green Final Draft application icon called Final Draft 7 Copy.
  5. Double-click Final Draft 7 Copy and another instance of Final Draft will open.
  6. Press Apple + V on your keyboard to paste your script into this blank file. Save this file to your Desktop with a name that's slightly different from the original.
  7. Quit both instances of Final Draft.
  8. Repair Permissions on your hard drive:
    1. Go to Mac HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
    2. Choose the First Aid tab and then select your boot disk [it'll probably be listed as Mac HD].
    3. Click Verify and Repair Permissions. This may take some time to complete.
    4. Do NOT restart your computer.
  9. Go to Mac HD > Users > username > Library > Preferences and if it's there drag com.finaldraft.fd7.plist to the Trash; empty the Trash.
  10. Restart your computer.
  11. Open the new copy of the script on your Desktop; this will be the new master.

If you're able to save the script, click HERE.

NOTE: Live support for Final Draft 7 has been discontinued. You will still be able to install, activate and use FD7 on appropriate computers but email, chat and telephone support is no longer available. Live activation assistance is still available via phone (818-789-6281) and email and chat (links on the left side of this page).
